The curve of the elevator tip faces the fingerprint side of the thumb.

The thumb faces up and the elevator tip faces down. I rarely use this position because of lack of control and too much leverage pressure can be applied.

When the wolf tooth is extracted but is still attached to a tag of gum, grasp the wolf tooth with the occlusal tip in the forefinger and the root tip in the thumb like thisd. Now apply pressure from the forefinger towards the thumb peeling away the tag from the tooth. If you reverse this and apply pressure from the thumb towards the forefinger, you will pull off a lot more gum tissue and the tooth will still be attached.
Use the flat wolf tooth elevator to help cut a tag of gum attached to the wolf tooth. In this position, the blade is driven down the tooth towards the root tip to sever the tag that is located at the flat elevator tip and attached to the tooth. The thumb stabilizes the tooth against the cutting action of the blade.

The blade is grasped between the thumb and forefinger.
The blade is placed directly over the blind wolf tooth.
Pressure is applied to the blade to cut through the gum, connective tissue, and into the wolf tooth. Too light a cut and you will need to repeat this action. You cannot cut hard enough, but don't slip off of the mark.
